What skills are most important for a job like yours?

To me, the most important skills for a role like mine include being open-minded and adaptable to change. The nature of budgeting and forecasting often involves responding to evolving financial landscapes.

For example, today the state of California announced a $68 billion budget shortfall. This will affect each county government within the state. So that's something we have to deal with.

Another skill is being proficient in Microsoft Excel. As I mentioned earlier, it's critical given its central role in data analysis, modeling, and creating financial reports.

The ability to navigate complex financial scenarios with flexibility and an open mind is key to making informed decisions and contributing to effective budget management. All in all, being able to analyze numbers in Excel and use that in real time to reflect our department's status in the current budget is important.

This includes understanding budget shortfalls or alterations we may need. It also helps when we ask the Chief Executive Office at LA County for different allocations.

Being able to professionally engage with external stakeholders is also important. Internally, it's crucial to ensure the team works well together and manages all our projects without missing any deadlines or due dates.
