What was the most impactful experience during your time at WP Carey?
First, getting out of my comfort zone was the most impactful experience, moving from India to the U.S. Having already gained six or seven years of experience, pursuing a master's degree at a certain age was truly game-changing for me.
During my nine months at WPKE, the most impactful experience at SU was undoubtedly my work as a research assistant at the Actionable Analytics Lab. This experience was a game changer for me, both academically and professionally.
It provided me with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I was gaining in my master's program to real-world business problems. Working on projects for a major company like Adidas gave me invaluable insights into how data science and analytics are used in the U.S. corporate world.
One project that stands out was developing a multi-label text classification model to analyze Adidas product reviews. We used BERT, which at the time was a cutting-edge NLP technique. This project was particularly impactful because it allowed me to dive deep into advanced NLP methods and understand their practical applications in e-commerce and customer feedback analysis.
Moreover, the overall experience gave me a taste of what it's like to work in a research environment. I learned how to approach problems methodically, design experiments, and interpret results critically. These skills have been invaluable in my subsequent roles, especially when it comes to experimenting with and implementing new AI technologies.
The connections I made during this time were also incredibly valuable. Working closely with professors, fellow researchers, and my friends from grad school, many of whom had previous industry experience, expanded my professional network. It also exposed me to diverse perspectives in the field of data science.
Lastly, this experience significantly boosted my resume and gave me concrete examples to discuss in job interviews. I believe it played a crucial role in helping me secure my position at Walmart after graduation, a significant step in my career.
My time as a research assistant at WPKE was transformative because it bridged the gap between academic learning and industry application. It accelerated my technical skills and set me on a path to become a leader in the field of AI.
