Career Path of a Generative AI Scientist at a Property Tech Company

Gagandeep's career progressed from a Data Scientist role at Conduent, focusing on "predicting enrollments, customer segmentation," to a Lead Data Scientist at Tata Consultancy Services, where they worked with unstructured data and NLP. A Master's in Business Analytics and subsequent roles at Walmart Labs and a real estate property management company saw their expertise evolve to encompass large language models and "automating staff" using AI for tasks such as call summarization and email systems.

Could you walk me through your career path, starting with your experiences in college? Did you have any internships or jobs before your current role?

Sounds good. To start, my career path began right after my undergraduate studies. I started as a data scientist at Conduent Business Services, then known as Xerox, in 2014.

At that company, I primarily worked in the health and welfare insurance domain. My work involved predicting enrollments and customer segmentation. I stayed with that company for almost three and a half years.

After that, I moved to Tata Consultancy Services as a Lead Data Scientist in 2018. There, I gained exposure to unstructured data in the Life Sciences domain. My projects included predictions and summarization of bio-statistical analysis reports from clinical study reports.

I utilized traditional machine learning and NLP algorithms for text mining. In 2021, I decided to enhance my skills with a Master's in Business Analytics at the WPKE School of Business at SU.

During my studies, I worked as a research assistant at the Actionable Analytics Lab and as a data scientist for a university department. I gained experience with state-of-the-art algorithms like BERT, focusing on text classification models using social media data.

Right after graduation, I joined Walmart Labs as a Senior Manager in Data Science, or Staff Data Scientist, as the role was a mix of both. I primarily worked in Walmart Claims Services, handling claims for workers' compensation, auto liability, and general liability.

My role as a data science manager was to lead and mentor my team. Given my prior experience in Natural Language Processing and the abundance of text data in claims services, we focused on building and automating processes for public claims services using NLP with large models. This included work with BERT, GPT, and Llama.

Currently, I am working at Realpage as a Data Science Manager, or Staff Gen AI Scientist. I am primarily involved in the real estate business, focusing on property management companies. My work involves automating tasks for them, such as call summarizations and AI-powered email and multi-system applications.
