What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?
I do like the flexibility. It's not like this in all labs, but in many labs, as long as you get the work done, there's quite a bit of flexibility.
You're on salary, not hourly. So, while some people do work long hours, there are also days where I can go to an appointment if needed without it being an issue. I don't have to ask anyone beforehand; I can just go.
This means there's a lot of independence. You have to really take your schedule into your own hands or you'll fall behind, and be proactive about your learning. But for people who like that and want to make their own life decisions, it's nice.
You can usually make a career path with your mentor, deciding what you want your future to look like. Then you can structure your day to move in that direction while also working on your own project. I enjoy being able to look at what I want and do the types of experiments I want. Though that can also be a discussion with your mentor, sometimes more than other times.
