What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

I did three things in undergrad that helped me catapult my career. First, I kept my GPA up very high, around 3.5. I found that certain firms wouldn't even look at your resume if you didn't have that GPA, so I feel that was definitely one thing that helped me.

Second, I joined a lot of student organizations. I knew I didn't have the network I wanted to chase these firms, and this really helped me. One of the guys I met in these groups was the one who sent my resume to IBM, which at the time didn't even hire from my college. That was very useful.

The third thing I did was a lot of internships. If you have the skills that companies want before they even hire you, it makes it easier for them to hire you. So I focused on getting a lot of big brand names on my resume, Fortune 500 companies. This made me a better candidate for stronger firms.

I think those three things, in pairing, were what helped me go from perhaps not a very well-known school to get a very high-paying job.
