As someone who identifies as a woman, how has that impacted the way you've navigated your career?

I don't think it plays too much into my career choices specifically. But as I've grown in the industry, I've realized that the construction world has historically been a very male-dominated field.

This doesn't always make things easy, especially when it comes to networking, getting involved, or securing clients. Sometimes, attending events means navigating a room full of middle-aged men while trying to make connections.

They may perceive me in certain ways, but I try to focus on my role and leverage the resources available. There are many great groups and ways to connect with other women.

For instance, there's a Women in Construction conference held annually by the Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange. It's an amazing event with around 5,000 women from all areas of construction. It’s a fantastic opportunity for networking and meeting other women in the field.

There are also other groups, like one focused on women in water resources engineering and sciences. They also host conferences and events. Many of these organizations sponsor undergraduate students and offer scholarships to encourage engagement.

I think it's important to lean on these resources if you're facing challenges. Use those connections to stay engaged, build yourself up, and boost your confidence.

Know that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Don't let perceptions, the industry's appearance, or the number of men at a meeting hold you back. You just have to walk in with your head held high, confident in yourself, and leverage your resources to succeed.
