What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
Venture capital is fun. It's one of those things where, at least for me being in Deep Tech, at Boost VC, we are the first check for Deep Tech. We look at pre-seed.
We get to see the earliest stages of people building something amazing. I think that's the most enjoyable part of my job: meeting people who are just like you and me and go through the same issues. Of course, there are founder-specific and company-specific issues.
But being able to meet these people who are in the grind, building something, and watching them pursue their dreams is indescribable. For example, at Boost VC, when we onboard and invest in them, we usually have them over for lunch with the team.
This gives us an opportunity to get to know what they're building. For me, I'm not always in the meetings where they pitch to my boss. It's so cool because they can sit there and I'll say, "Explain it to me like I'm five." Deep Tech is foreign to me; I don't even know the difference between crypto and Bitcoin.
They'll usually say something like, "Oh, you're so cute," and then explain it. It's really cool to see someone so committed to something. You just don't see that every day.
I think because the majority of the world is in the employee quadrant, it's hard to see people with passion for anything, let alone pursuing it wholeheartedly to see their dream come to life. This is one of the biggest things I enjoy: knowing I might have a small hand in getting them in front of my boss.
Being able to meet them at our founder summits and ask about their story and what motivated them to build something is rewarding. Some of these companies are literally life-saving, like for diagnosis or electric vehicles.
Then there are other fun ones, like one of our portfolio companies, Navier. It's kind of like the Tesla for boats, and it's super cool. They run on foils and ride like a plane, not a boat. You can go over huge wakes and feel nothing.
It's amazing how transportation, emergency response, and even the human body are being changed. So many different people are building these really cool things. Venture capital is where you get the opportunity to see all these ideas coming to life. That's probably one of the coolest things about being in venture capital.
