What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?
The most common way in is through internships. We had several interns over the summer.
Our most junior member, who is about two years out of undergraduate studies, is an analyst. He actually does a lot of operations work.
For example, there's a lot of administrative work involved in handling someone's investments. Here's an example of what he does: Let's say someone has been investing with us for 11 years and they ask, "I'm not sure how much I've invested with you guys, and I'm really not sure how much I've even made. Can you create a comprehensive portfolio for me so I can see what you've done for me from day zero?"
He will put together an analysis to show, "Here's how much you invested, when you made those investments, and here are all the returns you made on those respective investments." That's an example of something our analyst does.
