What do you enjoy most about being an executive coach?

That's a good question. It's about growth. It's watching the growth of somebody and thinking, "Wow, I didn't think I could do that."

When I first start a relationship with someone, I have them write a letter to their future selves. They write it as if they've achieved what they want.

The letter describes all the challenges they went through, saying, "We did it!" And you hear them talking about what they're going to go through. I tell them, "You've already done it. So go ahead and do it."

They've already congratulated themselves for it. The idea is to open the letter when they've achieved the goal. This way, they can go back and read their own words.

I think when someone writes that letter, the passion you see coming from them is beautiful. It's amazing to watch people realize their potential. They start to unlock that gate and open those doors.

They can see the opportunity they have for themselves, and it's a beautiful thing. I believe a person's best self is their authentic self. That's going to be your most effective version.

The most authentic version of you is the one that can do the most good in that space. So when I see people taking off the layers and getting to who they truly are, mastering it in their own way, they become untouchable.

They become the unique person only they can be, doing things their way. They put their own "stink" or "shine" on it, whatever you want to call it. It becomes uniquely theirs.

The confidence they gain from that is beautiful to watch. For me, it's sitting back and watching when people have breakthroughs. After a while, I just hear them talking to themselves.

Maybe they're talking to themselves, figuring it out in their own head. I'm just sitting back thinking, "Here we go. Here it is. This is the new person coming out."

Watching them emerge like a phoenix is beautiful at all levels. This applies whether you're entry-level, like my son, or someone in the C-suite, like a vice president of US operations. It's the same thing.
