What sorts of skills are most important for a job like yours?

I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer to that question. Different CEOs lead differently, and the context of every company is different.

Even timing is important. Starting a web company in 2010 was very different from starting one in 2000. Similarly, a cryptocurrency company today looks very different from what it would have been like in 2018.

The important thing is to figure out what you're good at and what your skill sets are, and then lean into those. I'm not a technical founder, so I've had to develop relationships with technical counterparts. This allows me to speak their language and translate business requirements, and vice versa.

I'm good at understanding people, what motivates them, and what they're looking for in their lives. This is useful for deciding what products to offer them, and also for understanding what motivates people to come to work. I've leaned heavily into my people skills to become a better, more effective leader.

I also think I'm personally good at problem-solving. Even if I don't know the answers or have context on a problem, being able to think abstractly and find solutions has generally been a skillset.

Finally, keeping calm under pressure is crucial. There's a lot of chaos in startups, and at times it can feel overwhelming. Persistence, gratitude for the opportunity, and reframing challenges to see the positive in them are important.

It might sound cliché, but having the ability to maintain a positive attitude as a leader of a young company is extremely important. Your team will feel your energy, observe where you put your attention, and follow your lead.
