What skills are most important for a job like yours?

The obvious two skills are firefighting and paramedic skills. Ninety percent of all calls we run in the fire service are medical.

The other 10% are vehicle accidents, rescues, and fires. But even in that 10%, every call is important. You and the rest of your crew have to be on your game.

I'd say the third skill, which is just as important, is people skills. Our community trusts their fire department. Not many professions allow you to walk into someone's house and have them feel completely comfortable with you.

Treating people nicely and professionally is huge; it's the biggest part of the job. Usually, when people call 911, it's the worst day of their lives.

We're there to fix it. That's kind of our job as firefighters. You're calling for a problem, and we're there to fix it, whether it's medical, your house is on fire, or the pilot light of your stove went out. We do just about everything.
