Biggest Challenges Faced by a CEO at Latina Advocates

As CEO of Latina Advocates, Carol finds that navigating bureaucracy is the biggest challenge, as the desire to "make change quick" clashes with the slow pace of systemic processes, often leading to political gridlock and the feeling that "great ideas [arrive] at a wrong time." Therefore, Carol focuses on taking a "bite-size approach" to change, understanding that progress, while potentially slow, is still being made toward long-term goals.

What is your biggest challenge in your role?

The biggest challenge is navigating bureaucracy. It can be so draining, and you want to make change quickly, but change takes time. Sometimes great ideas get stuck in political gridlock or disappear into a vast space of nothingness, which is very disheartening.

Other times, it feels like great ideas just come at the wrong time. Managing bureaucracies is tough because you have to stay grounded in your long-term goal. You might not see change overnight, but it's about taking a bite-sized approach to change, pushing the needle on something.

It might not be as quick as you want, but the system doesn't always operate that way, which can be frustrating. I try to help encourage my clients and myself to understand that it's a bite-sized approach at times, but we're getting there. That's probably the biggest challenge in my role.
