What A CEO At Parkside Asset Management Was Glad They Didn't Know Before Entering The Financial Services Industry

Carl, the CEO of Parkside Asset Management, believes "experiential learning is the best" and wouldn't have wanted a "playbook" for the role, preferring to learn by doing, even if that meant "getting punched in the face" initially. For Carl, the fulfillment comes from learning to dodge the punches and "punching back," highlighting a preference for hands-on experience over being told how to navigate the challenges of their career.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone had told you before?

Before entering the industry, I don't really think there's anything I wish anyone would have told me. I actually enjoyed discovering things on my own.

I don't like getting punched in the face, but once those punches come, you can see them coming. After learning from those lessons, you start dodging them, and then you start punching back. That's a really fulfilling thing.

Learning from others through classes or instruction is one way to go. However, I found that experiential learning is the best. So, I don't really wish anyone had told me anything; I just jumped into it.

That's just how I did it. I jumped in, started treading water, and found some help along the way. I'm happy I put in a lot of work and didn't give up. I don't think I would have benefited much, or I think I would have had less fun, if someone had given me a playbook on how it's supposed to be done.
