What did you do in college to set you up for success in your career?
While I was on campus, one of the biggest things that helped me was creating a brand for myself. This wasn't as conscious or calculated as you might think, but I was very active.
I had a lot of face time with people, spoke on stage, and participated in competitions and other activities. I also went to office hours, really creating a brand where most key people on campus knew who I was.
This also translated into some alums knowing who I was. The result was that for my first job after college, my final interview was with a managing director at the firm I was interviewing at. He already knew who I was because he was an alum and received the school's newsletters.
He saw my face several times, read stories about me, and saw ads. By the time I got to the interview, he felt like he already knew me. I had essentially already gotten the job without realizing it, and that really helped me.
