Favorite Parts Of Being A Producer At Red Bull Media House

Cameron, a Producer at Red Bull Media House, finds the most rewarding aspect of their role to be "figuring out what the story is and then…did I actually do my job in telling that story honestly?". This involves collaborating with athletes and crews, pushing creative boundaries ("let's shoot it a different way"), and forging deep connections with subjects, authentically documenting even difficult life experiences, as exemplified by a recent project featuring a wingsuit athlete's recovery from a severe injury.

What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

I'd say the most rewarding part of my job is working with the talented people I get to collaborate with, both athletes and hosts. What truly interests me, and what makes the challenging aspects of the job worthwhile, is figuring out the story.

My primary goal is to tell that story honestly and accurately. I love the collaborative process and the travel involved in my work. It's exciting to try new production methods, like experimenting with different shooting and editing techniques.

Instead of using typical sports music, I enjoy incorporating something unexpected, like classical music, to give a project a more artistic feel. I like pushing boundaries and trying new things. Doing the same thing repeatedly can lead to staleness.

I strive to create projects that are memorable and offer something viewers haven't seen before. Working with camera crews and other talent is also a highlight. You spend a lot of time with these individuals during production.

After long days, we often share meals and discuss our work and future plans. This allows you to get to know people well and build strong bonds. These relationships can lead to continued professional collaborations or valuable lessons learned from less ideal experiences.

The overall life experience this job provides is incredibly valuable. You're constantly out in the world interacting with all sorts of people. This includes asking strangers if they're willing to be featured in a project, often with the offer of compensation.

Surprisingly, a Red Bull can often be enough incentive for people to participate. Having snacks on hand has opened many doors and made unexpected opportunities possible. It's about being present and adaptable in the world.

It's challenging to get people to open up authentically. For example, I'm currently working on a project with a member of the Red Bull Air Force who survived a severe injury. Doctors told him he'd never walk again, yet he's already skydiving.

We're documenting his recovery, which has been a long journey over the past two years. His wife captured footage of his return from the hospital, including setting up a makeshift hospital room at home for his physical therapy.

Asking someone to share such a difficult period of their life requires immense sensitivity. The goal is to create something inspirational and honorable for the individual, their family, and their supporters.

Often, as a producer, you're brought into a project without knowing everyone well. When discussing challenging moments, if someone becomes emotional, I question if I've asked the right way or if I have the right to probe as an outsider.

However, this process allows for deeper connections than what's typically seen on social media, where people often present an idealized version of themselves. Even for social media projects, capturing an authentic light is a significant challenge. It's incredibly rewarding when you feel you've succeeded in doing so.
