College Experiences For A Management Supervisor In Tech Marketing

Cameron prioritized athletic pursuits early in college, but shifted focus later to career planning, "obsessed" over it during the final semester, and actively networked using connections from a Nike internship to secure multiple job offers upon graduation. This proactive approach, rather than "coasting," provided valuable options and ultimately shaped their career path.

What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

I worked pretty hard and sometimes sacrificed. The way I looked at the undergrad experience was that I wanted to be really great at being a college athlete.

Towards the end of my career, I recognized that I wanted to do well in the next thing, which was a career. So, to a certain point, I adjusted my priorities a bit so that I could spend more time figuring out what I wanted to do.

I obsessed over it my last semester when I was at Tennessee. I had already had my internship at Nike, but beyond that, I thought, "If I can't go back around for Nike, what are the other opportunities?" I started tapping into the relationships I had from Nike and hitting the job boards.

I think pushing really hard in my last semester to find as many opportunities as I could gave me options when I graduated. I was offered an internship for three months or a full-time position for a year, and I chose the internship because I thought the work was going to be more interesting.

So, I think pushing in that last semester, and maybe not doing what other people do sometimes, which is to coast in the last semester and figure it out in the summer, having a couple of options toward the end of the year can be a sigh of relief for you. But it also hopefully gives you more options and opportunities in the future.
