What skills are most important for a job like yours?
That's an excellent question. As a frontline fundraiser, it's very important to be comfortable speaking with people you may not know and meeting new people. It's not necessary to be an extrovert, but being comfortable speaking with people and having many interactions with them is key.
It's a people-oriented role, and that is number one. Within that, it's also important to be yourself, be authentic, and maintain professionalism and boundaries.
It's primarily relationship building. You want to open up and be a bit personal so others feel comfortable opening up and sharing more with you. However, there's a professional line to ensure you're not oversharing or crossing a boundary.
Be smart in how you interact professionally with people, ensuring your interactions come across as authentic and genuine, and bringing your own passion for the mission.
Working in nonprofits generally, especially at a place like UNICEF, means we're all here because of the mission. We care a lot about children, and that's what drives us to be there. It's not about making the most money you can. You need to come to this work with your own mission and passion for it.
Those are the very important things that come into the role of a philanthropy officer.
