What are your main responsibilities within your role?

I am a civil litigator who assists clients, specifically municipalities and cities. My role has two distinct areas.

As a litigator, I handle all court preparation for my clients. I also provide guidance to other associates working on different areas of litigation.

I talk to clients, counsel them, and answer their questions. My transactional practice also blends with my litigation work.

For example, if I am serving as a municipal attorney or city attorney, I might also be the attorney for cities with planning commissions. A legal background is necessary for this role.

Sometimes, a city does something that faces a legal challenge. My role is like a mobile quarterback, a dual threat. I can help run a meeting, and I can also prevail in court if necessary.

There's a crossover between the transactional practice of being a special or city attorney and the litigation practice of taking a matter to conclusion.

A third area I handle is reviewing and providing guidance on environmental documents like the California Environmental Quality Act. In this role, I am also an adjunct professor at UC Davis.

There, I teach CEQA and land use planning law. This helps me stay current with developments in my field and use my knowledge from civil litigation.

I bring this knowledge to my students. I occasionally show them how a writ works or how to file legal documents in court after teaching them the foundations of the law. This blend is beneficial for me, allowing me to provide insight to current law students and my clients.
