What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
I think what made me most successful in my career was a practice I began as an undergrad: keeping an open mind to what the future may hold. That's how I approach my work today, too. This is the plan for now, but the plan could change.
I always tell my colleagues, "The schedule is the schedule until it's not the schedule." As an undergrad, I went in undeclared and really had to find myself and figure out where I fit and what I wanted to do.
I initially thought I wanted to go into healthcare, then I pivoted to philosophy. I liked philosophy, but it wasn't quite fulfilling what I wanted academically.
Then I started with gender studies and really engaged with the material. It made me want to further the dialogue we were having in our classes. That's also how I approach my work.
Every time I make a film or am involved in making one, I want to do it better so that everyone involved has a better experience. I take every opportunity as a chance to learn something new and become a better version of myself.
That started in undergrad. Because I was in a liberal arts environment, I had to go out there and get it. It was a new field, particularly gender studies, which has only been a major for about 30 to 40 years, if that. Coming up with your own ideas and exploring them was super important, and that's super important to me now.
