What are some of the main responsibilities as a civil engineer?

As a civil engineer, there are many different disciplines within the field itself. These include transportation, geotech, and structural engineering.

My specific area is land development. In this role, I incorporate elements from various disciplines. I handle road designs, sanitary sewer design, water network design, and storm infrastructure.

My job is to master plan large communities, including where homes and future commercial sites will be located. My responsibilities are tied together by changing the land and grading.

For example, structural engineers focus on steelwork and building design to ensure structures remain standing. I essentially manage everything outside of a building.

I also get to work a bit on transportation projects, which is enjoyable because I don't handle the complex, large-scale highway design. I like my job because I get to experience a little bit of everything.
