What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

I definitely love the flexibility in my current role. For me, at this life stage as a mom of two young boys, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, it's important to be available. I love being around for them when they get out of preschool, and of course, they're just down the street.

A flexible job allows me to make my own hours. If they're sick, I can pick them up. Sometimes I even decide it's a "no school today" kind of day, and they stay home with me to hang out.

Being able to say no to meetings because they don't fit my life is a kind of autonomy I can't give up, especially at this point in my career and with my past work experiences. It's incredibly important to me. Once you have that freedom and flexibility, it's difficult to let go of.

I used to travel quite a bit with my previous line of work, doing similar things. I was even the CEO of a company called Social Intelligence, which required a lot of travel. I enjoyed that; it was a lot of fun.

I still travel about four times a year now, but it's complicated with my young children and my current life stage. What I really like about the virtual opportunities now is being able to still do what I enjoy. I have that freedom to talk to people, give keynotes, and do these things, but in a virtual environment. This way, I get a nice mix of both.

If you like that work-from-home, flexibility style, or starting your own consulting business, it's not something that happens overnight. However, it's really awesome to have that kind of ownership of my life.
