What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?
There are many opportunities to get into accounting and auditing. I personally started at PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the big public accounting firms. I know friends who were at Ernst & Young, Deloitte, and KPMG, but I'm sure there are many other consulting firms that do accounting and audit-related work.
These firms offer exceptional experience. While it's not easy, as I've tried to emphasize throughout this interview, it is worth it. I don't think you can get better experience anywhere else.
It gives you a bird's-eye view, and you get to work on every area of financial statements across multiple industries, including technology, healthcare, and manufacturing. Starting out as an associate at a public accounting firm would be great.
However, I have a coworker who found an industry she liked and started in an accounting role within that specific industry. There are many opportunities, which is why people need accountants and auditors.
It's not a glamorous job, but it's essential. Every company, business, and non-governmental organization needs an accountant or auditor. There are opportunities everywhere, and you just have to be willing to start and work your way up. Set a goal, know where you want to go, and work towards it. There are many entry-level opportunities available everywhere.
