Video Highlights
1. Learning the local market and its nuances (freeways, public officials, city boundaries) is crucial for new reporters.
2. Thorough research and understanding of a story's context are essential, especially when covering unfamiliar topics. Mistakes can lead to negative consequences (e.g., being directed away from a location).
3. Navigating the technical aspects of reporting (writing, location accuracy, etc.) presents a significant learning curve for new reporters in any market.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
My biggest challenge is getting to know the market. That's probably the most difficult thing for new reporters and producers when they change stations. It involves getting to know the freeways, public officials, and the boundaries of the county and city.
Learning the area takes so long, especially if you've never been there before. You have to be very careful with your wording and writing, particularly if it's about a topic you don't know much about.
For example, when I was assigned my first Mexican American border story, I realized I didn't know a lot about the border, customs, and border patrol. I went to the wrong location and was yelled at by border patrol, so I had to go to a different location on the wall.
There are just a lot of technical things that present a big learning curve for any reporter starting anywhere, not just in San Diego. I'd say the biggest struggle is learning your market and understanding what news is important there and what isn't.
