What in undergrad set you up for success in your career?
In undergrad, I pursued two things. First, I earned a basic business degree, which in India is called a Bachelor of Commerce. This is equivalent to what I believe you have here as a Bachelor of Business Administration.
Along with that, I also completed a professional certification. This was the Indian equivalent of the CPA, known as Chartered Accountancy. I found this course incredibly helpful, as studying for a professional exam differs significantly from preparing for a graduate exam.
Professional exams don't typically include assignments or casework. Instead, you have a set exam period to answer very difficult questions accurately. This taught me the ability to work long hours and study for demanding exams like the CA, CPA, or even the CFA for those interested in hardcore finance.
This rigorous preparation instilled a strong work ethic from an early age, which proved beneficial when I started at EY at 21. The professional courses prepared me for the long hours required in the professional workforce.
If you have the opportunity, especially in finance, adding value to yourself through certifications like CA, CPA, or CFA is highly recommended. This is particularly useful if you're transitioning into finance from a non-finance major. Professional certifications are an excellent way to enhance your resume.
