What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?
I think it's related to playing the long game. You have to consider projects that might take a long time, or even projects that may fail. It's good to have a long-game perspective.
For example, I was part of a layoff. You have to maintain the perspective that your career will go on for decades. What matters today, tomorrow, or in the next three months might not be what truly matters in the long run.
You need to keep the big picture in mind to steer the project and people in the right direction. This is better than focusing on day-to-day failures or mishaps, which always happen. That's the stressful part of project management.
This field requires stamina. Having the perspective to recognize small milestones you're achieving is important. If there's a challenge or failure, you should consider if it truly matters in the grand scheme of things and how you can learn from it.
I probably have 30 more years in this career. Thinking about how to survive the workforce for those 30 years in this type of role is important.
