What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

The best thing I've done for myself is to be proactive in seeking opportunities. Things don't just fall into my lap.

I think everything I've done has been because I had my eye out for something. Whether it was The Edge program, which ultimately led to a five-year job that supported me through law school, or making connections at my law school with the career development office and the deans. Participating in student-led activities also led to the Career Development Office saying, "Hey, there's a job that's going to be posted. You should apply; this looks like something you've been talking about."

So, you have to create opportunities for yourself. You have to be very active in researching different opportunities. If you want something, you have to take the reins and make it happen for yourself.

There's luck, but it's better to be active and create luck for yourself rather than wait for something to happen. I think that comes in different forms. Volunteering, working, and being courteous to people will all factor in and help you create opportunities for yourself.
