How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
First, you definitely have to enjoy being in a fast-paced environment. Because it's so fast-paced, things change constantly. You have to be open to change and comfortable with it. It will happen annually, even monthly, so you really have to keep up.
I would also say that you have to be thick-skinned. It is a very male-dominated industry, at least for women. You will encounter challenges managing or dealing with people on a regular basis. Being thick-skinned is definitely going to help.
Last but not least, just be personable in general. Being personable goes a long way. I was told by one of my mentors a long time ago, and it's something people say all the time: treating a janitor the way you treat a CEO goes a long way.
It really does bring you to the top of any industry. Particularly for the casino industry, it's very experience-driven, more so than education-driven. You have to keep that in mind and make sure you give respect to anyone who has worked in this industry for a long time.
