What does a day in the life of a civil design engineer look like?
When I get into the office and log into my computer, I typically start by going through emails. I make sure there's nothing pressing, as some emails are a higher priority.
I'll reply to any emails that require a response. Once that's done, which usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, I open AutoCAD and start designing.
This involves things like grading for a site, producing plans, or drawing up a site plan. We design everything outside of the building, like the parking and concrete walkways for a development.
Our work ensures everything fits the property and complies with city or county recommendations. That's a big part of the job.
I also have meetings throughout the day, mostly on Zoom or Teams now. It's nice not to always have to go out into the field, but sometimes I do have field meetings. Throughout the day, I also answer emails and manage my time to hit deadlines.
