What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

As I mentioned, I was in the theater department when I was getting my AA degree. That naturally led into working with actors and directors as a stage manager. I'd say that's what inspired me to continue down the road of entertainment.

To be honest, at that point, I had no idea I'd be doing what I'm doing today. One thing I did well, because I didn't have a traditional path, was that I wasn't shy about asking for help. I wasn't shy about reaching out to say, "Hey, do you know so-and-so at such-and-such company?"

It's a different day and age now; I know everybody is on LinkedIn and tries to connect through that way, which is great. I'm not saying that's not a significant path, but I do know that, like I mentioned earlier, I had no idea about sound design and music composition when I went to interview for the company that eventually hired me to direct my first video game.

But I wasn't afraid to go because I knew one of the people there, and I knew he wouldn't have called me in for this interview if there wasn't something. So, maintaining relationships along the way has always been my strong suit.

I don't advertise, and sadly, I don't even have a website because I can never get it finished. But I think that speaks volumes that I get repeat clients, and it's because I value the relationships. I value connecting people and putting a face to the name. I'd say that pretty much set me up for where I'm at today.
