Favorite Parts Of Working In The Technology Industry As A Senior Software Engineer

Alec, a senior software engineer, enjoys the industry's ability to "touch millions of people," the constant evolution of challenges, and the financial rewards, contrasting positively with prior experiences at a startup where "it wasn't always clear what we did." The opportunity to "build things," even if only "pixels on a screen," and the resulting brand recognition of Alec's current employer are also significant sources of satisfaction.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?

I like my industry because of how it can touch millions of people at the same time. I find that rewarding.

There is something nice about being able to talk to someone and have them understand what I do. Knowing that it impacts millions of people is fun. Computers can scale, and I get to capitalize on that.

I also enjoy building things, even though they aren't physically tangible. They're just pixels on a screen, but I still like to build in that sense. My job allows me to do that.

My work is continually changing. What I'm doing now is quite different from what I was doing 15 or 20 years ago. Things change and evolve over time.

The challenges that were technically difficult in the past are now easier for people to manage. This allows us to move on to new challenges and new things. It's not like working in a factory where you'd get bored doing the exact same thing every day, unless you let yourself be pigeonholed.

This industry is also financially rewarding at this moment, which is very nice. The upsides are obvious.

I work for a company with brand recognition, which is also a plus. When I worked for a startup, people would ask where I worked, and I'd have to explain what it was. While at that startup, it wasn't always clear what we did. Now, it's nice and easy.

People complain about things that I have no impact on. But I think those are the things I like most about the industry.
