How Identity Has Influenced a Managing Director at Qualia Legacy Advisors' Career

Aaron, a Managing Director at Qualia Legacy Advisors, advises undergraduates to "study what you find interesting," emphasizing that a direct career connection isn't crucial; employers value demonstrated hard work, curiosity, and passion more than a perfectly aligned academic background, as seen in their own zig-zag career path from economics to investment banking and then the film industry.

What did you do in your undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

I majored in economics as an undergrad, which is a pretty good background for almost anything. I went into investment banking right away, so that felt natural. Then I moved to the creative side of the film business after business school.

So, my economics background wasn't directly preparing me for film, but it was still a valuable foundation. I'd advise undergrads to study what interests them. Don't worry too much if you don't immediately see the career path.

People often pivot and change directions. Interviewers are looking to see that you've excelled in your chosen pursuits and that you're intelligent and engaged. Work hard.

In my opinion, employers aren't concerned if your undergraduate studies are an exact match for the job. They want to see that you're curious and have a passion for what you'll be doing.
