What skills are most important for a job like yours?
There are two essential skills: communication and consistent hard work. Clear communication is vital, not just with your team, but also with clients. It involves setting the right expectations and understanding their needs, deadlines, and objectives.
This clear communication helps you deliver effectively. It also allows you to provide feedback to the product team about what products can be built and where the organization can grow.
Communication with your team is equally important. For me, it's about ensuring my team has clear expectations of their tasks. They should also feel that their work environment is open and safe.
This includes job security, feeling empowered, and believing their work makes a difference. I'm a big proponent of that.
It's also about removing obstacles they face. My teams often provide me with a list of blockers, and I work to remove them so they can perform their jobs better. So, communication is definitely key.
The second skill is hard work. I often share a saying with students and during presentations. If I consistently work two extra hours each day, that adds up to over 10 hours a week.
Those 10 hours a week are equivalent to an extra day in my week. Doing this every day for an entire year can add one to two months of extra work that I can accomplish.
This is often what it takes, especially in the startup world: consistent hard work. It's not about working hard in sprints, with one week intense and the next relaxed.
It's about an ongoing, consistent discipline that you must teach yourself to be successful in this role.
