What skills are most important for a job like yours?
The skills that are most important for a job like mine are what I mentioned earlier: the ability to wear many hats. You've got to be able to say, "Yes, okay, I'll do that. I'll try it. How hard could it be?" and dive in.
Another huge skill is making time for self-care because you have to maintain composure in stressful situations. A lot will be put on your shoulders, and you need to be able to step back and realize that while you're passionate about this, you don't need to feel the pressure of the world at all times.
Remember you have a team and use that team. Delegation is huge; that's a big skill you want to learn quickly. Also, writing and communication skills, and graphic design skills are important. You'll be communicating that mission to the people you're serving and getting your message across.
However, the biggest skill, and perhaps something that comes inherently to people drawn to nonprofits, is passion. You've got to be passionate about what you work on and your focus. Otherwise, you're going to burn out.
So, it's a balance between being passionate and practicing self-care without overworking yourself. Learning that balance is a huge skill as well.
