What is one lesson that you've learned that has proven significant in your career?
One lesson that has proven significant in my career, as cliché as it sounds, is that no question is a dumb question. At Helix, asking questions is highly encouraged as we incorporate learning by doing. Helix staff, including planners, scientists, biologists, archeologists, acoustical and air quality specialists, GIS specialists, and many others, are able to answer any questions you may have. This ensures our work and project products are of the highest quality.
When I first started as an environmental planner, I was given assignments I had never worked on before, so I had a lot of questions. I scheduled and continue to schedule meetings with my project managers and specialists to tackle these questions. This preparation allows me to complete assignments adequately and within the desired timeframe and budget. Getting your questions answered efficiently is also really helpful when it comes to project cost and deadlines.
I stay on top of my projects by creating an outstanding needs document to ensure all necessary questions are being answered. Asking questions is also important for professional growth. It is important to know how you can continue to learn and grow in your career.
Helix allows all employees to participate in trainings and webinars to learn more about environmental topics they might be most interested in. I have attended numerous workshops relating to environmental impact reports, NEPA compliance documents, and air quality and greenhouse gas emissions modeling. Learning more in the environmental realm can encourage you to discover what direction you want to go in your professional career and what further questions you might want to ask.
