What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
The most important thing I did in college was determine my field of study. I didn't start at UC Davis knowing I wanted to be an environmental planner consultant.
Initially, I was a neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major, unsure of my path. Over my four years, I took courses in environmental policy and planning.
One course focused on the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), detailing compliance documentation and environmental resource sections. Learning about CEQA, which I knew little about before, sparked my interest in environmental consulting.
This led me to apply for and accept the position of environmental planner at Helix Environmental Planning. An internship or work experience during college is also extremely helpful.
Even if an internship or job isn't in your desired field, you can learn valuable skills. Working collaboratively or independently, and problem-solving with others, are challenging but rewarding skills.
Starting these experiences in college allows time to learn from others and discover your preferred working style. Being passionate and eager to learn doesn't go unnoticed by employers.
It's crucial to identify what excites you and will keep you motivated to learn and grow professionally. Ask questions and explore career paths that align with your passions. I hope my experience as an environmental planner offers helpful ideas for navigating your career.
