What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Without a doubt, we are working in the realm of human capital. It truly is how you talk to people, how you speak to them, how you engage them, and how you empower those that work for you.
It's about inspiring and motivating people to get the job done, even when you're not there. I really want to emphasize that last part.
If I don't put out a vision that is succinct, clear, and understood by my leads, there is no way I could ever go on vacation or drive my kids to school. I'd be stuck working every single day because I would have failed as a leader.
I would have failed to provide good, clear direction to help them manage their own time and schedules, so they know what needs to be done in my absence.
In short, the most important thing is managing human capital and making that your top priority. Air vehicles break down, but humans must be handled very carefully. Make that the most important thing you deal with.
