Career Lesson From a Program Director at Girls Incorporated of Alameda County

Johanna's most significant career lesson centers on value alignment, emphasizing that career success hinges on "what the end game is for yourself," and finding a role where the organization's mission resonates with their own goals; otherwise, "you're not gonna last." This focus on aligning personal values with organizational mission has been crucial for Johanna's career progression.

Q11: Significant lesson - career

What is one lesson that you have learned that is proven significant in your career?

One lesson is that it's not about me. No matter what your job is, or at whatever point in your career you're at, the paycheck is for you. You need to survive and you deserve to be excited and happy.

But in the end, what's the end game? Why did you take the job? Does their mission, does their vision align with you? Because if it doesn't, you're not gonna last.

Being particular about what makes you thrive and that value alignment really is the deal breaker. If I know that I can't do what I want to do, because my end game is to keep after-school programs open, and I'm in an aspect of that organization that doesn't allow me any influence, then it's not for me.

So, find the one that matches, so that you understand what the end game is for yourself.
