How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
I would say people who are willing to learn new skills are going to be the best in this industry. Human resources is a very dynamic field, and you deal with a variety of different problems that you need to solve.
You want to be a problem solver and be willing to learn new skills. Every single day at my job, I learn something new. This could be about the healthcare industry, because I recruit for healthcare, or about human resources in general.
Or maybe I learn about a policy problem that keeps coming up and I need to figure out how to solve it. Working for the local government, no matter what HR position you're in, you're going to have problems that you'll need to solve. You'll need to be ready to learn a new skillset and apply it wherever possible.
So, just being able to be open to continuous growth is really big. Being willing to listen to other people and know that you're not always right is important. There are parts of problems and equations that you don't even see. You want to make sure that you're learning from other people and getting as much information as you can from them.
In addition to being willing to learn a new skillset and listen to others, you want to make sure that you're also willing to collaborate with different groups. And just be passionate. If you have passion for something, it doesn't matter what field you're trying to enter, if you have the degree, or if you have the experience.
If you have the passion, you'll be willing to learn new skills and really thrive in these types of roles. You have to be willing and able to apply those skills. If you're very interested in the field, I have no doubt you would be able to do it.
