Erin, what are your main responsibilities within your current role?

The thing I really like about my current role is that there isn't a typical day. It's not like I walk in and do the exact same thing every single day. My primary responsibility as a personnel analyst here at the county is to recruit.

I work on the healthcare agencies team. I formulate job postings to put onto our website. This way, when applicants or prospective candidates are looking for a job, they can go onto our website and apply for our positions.

I also write the job descriptions. When candidates apply, I screen their applications to make sure they meet the minimum requirements on the posting. For example, if a hiring manager wants someone with four years of registered nursing experience, I make sure the candidate has that before moving them forward. I then refer the names that meet the minimum qualifications to the hiring manager so they can conduct selection interviews and hopefully make a hire.

The recruitment process is very dynamic, so it's not always cut and paste. We have to use marketing skills and know where to promote our postings. This might involve finding an online job board or going to universities and different schools to talk to students and let them know we're hiring for the positions they're interested in.

It is a very collaborative job. In addition to recruitment, I also supervise two people. I supervise two office assistants who work on our certification team. They send names to the hiring manager in the correct order.

Because I work for the public sector, we have to follow the civil service process when we recruit. It's a merit-based system, so the most qualified candidates are supposed to be referred to the hiring manager first, followed by the second and third standing candidates, and so on.

I monitor their work to ensure all company policies, local ordinances, and the general government framework for recruitment and referring names are being followed correctly. I have two primary responsibilities, but I really like my job because we do so many different things. We attend job and career fairs, and this interview is a good example. We're trying to get the word out that we are hiring. As a recruiter, my primary responsibilities all surround that goal.
