Could you walk me through your career path, starting with your experiences in college? Please include any internships or jobs you had before your current role.
My career definitely started in college. I knew I wanted to go into marketing or communications, but I wasn't sure of the specific direction. Marketing exists in virtually every industry and has so many different functions.
So, I actually had over 10 different internships or jobs in college. I worked in nonprofit, for a film company, in sports, fashion, and technology, in all different kinds of roles. I did social media, corporate social responsibility, public relations, advertising, and client relations. I really wanted to get a sense of what type of marketing I liked.
After college, my first job was at a boutique PR firm in Chicago, which I really loved. It was a small team, and I worked with many wonderful startup brands. It was a lot of fun, but I knew I wanted to do more in marketing. PR is just a slice of marketing, and I wanted to explore other areas.
I then moved to a tech company called Vibes, a mobile marketing software platform. I was in their client relations department for a bit, then moved to their internal marketing team. I was able to land that role because I had a blog on the side as a personal project. I had a whole portfolio of content and could present it to the company, showing my experience in content marketing.
I stayed at Vibes for a couple of years. Then, I moved to The Not Worldwide, which many know as more of a wedding magazine or website. It's actually a marketplace where couples and vendors meet, and couples can book their vendors for their wedding. I was their content marketing manager for a few months.
After that, I moved into Demand Generation, which is more of a holistic marketing approach for B2B companies. I was there for almost three years. Recently, in the last month or so, I've moved jobs again. I am now at a startup agency, where I am their head of marketing strategy. That's a summary of my career so far.
