What skills are most important for a job like yours?
First and foremost, paying attention to detail is crucial. In my daily work, I write every day, so I must ensure I'm using correct grammar and punctuation.
It's also important when presenting things to clients. You want to make sure you're paying attention to detail and don't have any mistakes.
Second, organizational skills are essential. As I mentioned, I have many different things due throughout the week. When I was first assigned all these tasks, I was honestly a little overwhelmed.
I had to remember what was due on which day and when to send it for review to my supervisor before sending it to the client. There are many small things to remember for different clients. Learning how to stay organized has definitely helped me.
This skill will help you in any role, but especially in PR, specifically within an agency where you're managing different clients. Keeping track of coverage for your accounts is also very important.
You also need an eye on the media, knowing what's trending and what's important for your client. That's something else you need to know.
Lastly, be comfortable taking risks. If there's a media trend and you want to get your client's voice in there, you might need to take that risk to get coverage. It's okay if someone doesn't pick it up, but learning to take that risk is what's important.
Managing deadlines is also key, especially being able to work on a tight deadline. Sometimes someone will ask you to do something and have it by the end of the day or within 24 hours. Knowing how to manage what you already have to do, on top of new things, is really important. Managing them in terms of deadlines is also crucial.
