Being detail-oriented is crucial. In finance, you can't afford to make mistakes. You need to understand the minutiae of where money is going, especially as a startup with limited revenue that's burning cash.

A big part of my job is stewarding our cash and ensuring we don't run out. It's vital to understand all the details of our financial model and our actual spend. Strong financial modeling skills are also really important.

Communication is essential. Business operations is a broad title that can mean many things. However, in most companies, it means working with stakeholders across the entire organization.

You need to know how to communicate effectively with your engineering team, which is different from communicating with your sales, marketing, or HR teams. You have to understand what motivates different people and what they are looking for when they ask a question.

Those are the two most important things.
