What A Strategic Partner Manager At YouTube Wishes They Had Known Before Entering The Tech Industry

Victor, a Strategic Partner Manager at YouTube with an electronic engineering background, wishes they had known the value of basic coding skills before entering the tech industry. This skill, even at a basic level like "SQL or whatever," would have greatly aided their ability to analyze the "large amounts of data" crucial to decision-making in their role, even one focused on external partnerships.

Video Highlights

1. Knowing some coding (especially SQL or data analysis tools) is beneficial for analyzing large datasets and making informed decisions in the tech industry.

2. Many decisions in tech are data-driven, so data analysis skills are valuable even in roles not directly focused on coding.

3. Victor's background in electronic engineering shows that a technical foundation can be an asset in a Strategic Partner Manager role at YouTube, even without extensive prior coding experience.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?

I'll try to be very specific and link to a few things that happened to me. As an electronic engineer, I had a little bit of coding as I was in undergrad school, but I didn't care for it too much. I wasn't interested.

But now, as I look back, I see that if I knew a little bit of coding, especially for creative analysis using large amounts of data or at least SQL or whatever, I'm not talking about really hard coding, but just not being totally unaware, it would probably help me right now. This would help me do some analysis using large data models.

I wish I could go back and know that. I'm not talking specifically within the video creative industry, but thinking the tech industry, a lot of the decisions we make are based on data. So, knowing a little bit of coding can definitely help you in the tech industry in general.

Even in a position like mine, which is completely external, to do your own analysis and to make sure you're making the right decisions using large amounts of data can definitely help.
