Career Path of a Real Estate Transaction Manager at a Bank

Vanessa's career path began with a year at San Francisco State University as a computer science major, a field not of personal interest but chosen by parents, before transferring to the Fashion Institute and obtaining an AA degree in merchandising; however, a suggestion from parents to get a real estate license "in case something happens" led to an administrative position at Wells Fargo working with real estate VPs, then promotion to property asset manager, and ultimately to a current role as a real estate transaction manager handling real estate transactions for a financial banking company across eight states.

Could you walk me through your career path? Start with your experiences in college, any internships, or jobs you had before your current role.

Okay. After high school, I went to San Francisco State University for my first year as a computer science major. This was something my parents picked for me; I didn't really want to get into that field, but they thought it would be something I should do.

I actually wanted to go to the Fashion Institute and become a buyer for a retail company. So, after a year or two at SF State, I transferred to the Fashion Institute where I finished with my AA degree in merchandising.

My parents also suggested I get my real estate license to have something in the background, just in case. So, I ended up getting my real estate license probably in the early 2000s.

From there, I got an admin position at Wells Fargo. I was an admin for the VPs and senior VPs who handled real estate for the bank. Fast forward a few years, and I was promoted to a property asset manager.

In that role, I handled all the smaller tenant leases for the country. I would renew tenant leases and look for tenants to occupy empty spaces in our buildings. A few years later, I became a real estate transaction manager.

Now, I handle about eight states in the country. I do all the real estate transactions for the bank for those eight states, buying, selling, and leasing real estate based on our company's needs.
