Q11: Significant lesson - career

What is one lesson that you've learned that has proven significant in your career?

Well, I think one thing that I'm being reminded of right now is that things are cyclical. As a journalist, I've experienced what technology could do to an industry. As a daily reporter, I recall the internet impacting newsrooms.

The need for the written word was something people believed would go away. But here we are, we're still writing and still reading, perhaps more than ever. People are writing not only in traditional formats but also in digital formats.

So, realize that nothing is new. Realize that things come back, and they come back in unexpected ways. Never give up.

Keep an eye on what you do. If you feel your skills aren't as valuable as you think, think again. Look for other opportunities and look for opportunities to innovate and evolve.

I think those are the things that have been significant to my career because I'm always remaking myself, both in terms of the content I produce and my approach.
