What skills are most important for a job like yours?

There are a few key things. I think writing and communication skills are the biggest asset. My job entails a certain amount of data analytics, but I didn't have any background in that before coming to this position.

Personally, I think it is a lot easier to pick up data skills than to become a really good writer if you're not already a strong writer. So, having your writing skills down pat is really important. This is true for any journalistic role, but even for roles that lean more towards data analytics.

Another big thing is time management. In any journalism role, you'll be juggling several different assignments, projects, or priorities. Understanding the prioritization of these things is crucial. As a journalist, you're always on a deadline, so you have to be able to meet them and work effectively with that constraint.

Procrastination isn't necessarily a dealbreaker. I think many great journalists I know tend to procrastinate and put off writing tasks. However, you still have to manage your time well when the crunch comes.

Another big thing is being able to learn quickly. I had to pick up data analytics in this job. More broadly, you may need to become an expert in something very quickly in order to write authoritatively about it.

In a traditional reporter role, this might be easier as you can talk to people who can explain things. In my role, where I approach things as an analyst and need to write authoritatively, I sometimes have to do a lot of research into a topic quickly. Being able to pick things up on the fly is really important.
