What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

My main responsibilities involve writing both short-form and long-form projects related to my areas of coverage, my beats. My main beat is streaming, specifically subscription video streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus. I focus on what's happening in that space.

Short-form pieces are typically guided by current news or bigger picture trends. We might write about a recent development or a trend we want to explore. For example, new bundles that are popping up, where they package services like Disney Plus and Max together, are a really big thing right now that I focus on often.

The long-form side involves monthly special reports, which are deeper dives into one particular area. Last year, we did a report that focused just on these new bundles and the different ways streaming services are being packaged together.

These long-form reports are filled with data and charts about different topics within the broad area we're looking at. They are accompanied by analysis that I write. Essentially, it's two forms of the same role, differing mainly in length and format.

I find data to support the argument I want to make. I'll look at the data, see what it says, and draw conclusions or build an argument from that. You need your data, your analysis, and your argument to build from.

Occasionally, I do other things. I hosted an episode of our Strictly Business podcast where I interviewed an executive at Crunchyroll, the anime-centric streaming service. I've also done a few reported stories that are more similar to what I used to do, which involves interviewing people in a more traditional journalism role. While I do that occasionally, analysis and data are really my main focus.
