What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
My biggest challenges as a consultant were prioritization and attention to detail. Early in the job, you receive a large volume of tasks, so prioritizing effectively is crucial to ensure you're completing the right tasks first.
I struggled with this because while I had been busy before, I had never been responsible for tasks on behalf of a boss or client. It became important to spend my time on what was most important to them. I had to learn how to consistently identify the most important priorities.
Attention to detail was also a challenge. I was never a great note-taker and am not naturally detail-oriented, but as a consultant, accuracy is essential. I would produce work with minor errors, and my managers frequently provided feedback on this.
It took significant time and effort to develop processes for consistently delivering high-quality, error-free work. We called this "client-ready" work. To achieve this, I had to build in checks for myself to ensure accuracy.
These were my two biggest challenges as a consultant. Fortunately, I was able to overcome them with support from my teams and managers, who helped me learn and grow to be successful.
