What does a day in the life of a principal look like?
Challenge and fun. I love what I do because it's varied every single day. I don't do the same thing two days in a row.
On any given day, I could be having a set of meetings with clients, talking about their challenges and issues and what we can do to facilitate those. I could be at networking meetings, either with local agencies or potential clients, networking to find new business development opportunities.
I also respond to proposals for new business. Some of it comes through networking, some through personal relationships, and some through referrals. Other times, it's just responding to proposals and describing what our agency is all about, how we're staffed, structured, and why we're the right fit for a particular assignment.
Part of the day is always responding to our clients. Our clients pay our salaries, and they are who we are responsible to. So, we not only have to have a plan, but we have to execute it on time, within budget, and solve their challenges.
This could involve drafting content; I do a lot of writing. It could be overseeing materials and content developed by someone else, or responding to media calls for our clients. Client service is a large part of my day.
The last part of my role, as I mentioned earlier, is Chief Operating Officer, which involves administrative work. This includes ensuring accounting is accurate, billing is appropriate, and maintaining relationships with my creative partners across the United States.
