Favorite Parts of Being a Project Director at a Global Logistics Provider
Tony, as Project Director, finds the most rewarding aspect of the role to be "enforc[ing] a positive work environment" by fostering team spirit, positive conflict management, and emotional intelligence, arguing this is crucial because toxic environments contribute to mental health issues. Tony advocates for "humane leadership with empathy" that inspires and transforms rather than resorting to micromanagement, and believes MBA programs should codify methods for ensuring positive work environments.

Q5: Favorite parts of your role?
One critical aspect of leadership, especially in roles like project director, is to intentionally enforce a positive work environment. There's a significant link between toxic work environments and mental health issues, though I can't quantify the exact percentage.
Leaders should strive to ensure a positive work environment. This could be a topic worth studying in MBA programs, perhaps even codifying specific actions to achieve this. It's not just about adapting to Gen Z's preferences for working on their own terms.
Instead, it's about a new style of leadership. Leaders shouldn't be seen as mere taskmasters micromanaging with a stick. My experience as a project director has shown that enforcing a positive environment brings out the best in my team.
I understand we're human, and negative situations or conflicts will arise. However, how you manage those conflicts and foster team spirit is crucial. Team spirit is a key component of the positive work environment I enforce.
Positive conflict management and emotional intelligence are very important. Many leaders and managers, for various reasons, still lack these skills, though things may be starting to change. It’s important to advocate for humane, empathetic leadership.
This kind of positive leadership inspires and transforms, rather than just belittling people. I wanted that on record. Thank you.
